The Democratic Value of News has been published at a critical moment in the evolution of public service broadcasting. The quality of news citizens receive has never been more important but the deregulation of media environments, increased budgetary pressures and rapid technological change mean that in many western democracies public service news provision is under pressure. Although public service broadcasters still have popular support, their presence and the quality of what they produce cannot be taken for granted. The case for support needs to be continuously made in the face of opponents who would like to see public service media sidelined or disappear.
