A continuum crack propagation model based on the smeared crack approach in 3D space is introduced. The developed approach is able to simulate non-uniform cracking within the cracked element. The proposed model simulates the tensile fracture on the Gaussian point level and contains pre-softening behavior, softening initiation, fracture energy conservation, and strain rate effects under static and dynamic loads. The validity of the proposed model is considered using the available experimental results. The direct and indirect displacement control algorithms are used to consider the performance of the proposed numerical model under static loading conditions. The validity of the model in dynamic loading conditions is considered using seismic analysis of Koyna dam in India. It is found that the proposed nonlinear model and the pertinent numerical algorithms give excellent results in comparison with the experimental and the other numerical results. Finally, the seismic behavior of Morrow Point dam is considered including dam-reservoir interaction effects. It is found that the obtained results and crack profiles within the dam body are in excellent agreement with the normal seismic behavior of concrete arch dams.
