摘要

Possible influence of propagation of seismic wave on tunnels and piles (shafts) is considered using simple models and formulas. It has been demonstrated that the failure of Daikai station during the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu (Kobe) earthquake is most likely caused by the excessive horizontal displacement of the surrounding ground. It has been postulated that the stresses and strain in piles, shafts and deep tunnels near the stiff-soft ground interfaces is most likely caused by seismic wave refraction at the interfaces between stiffer and softer ground layers.
