Recent Developments in EU Law and Policy on State Aids

After nearly 40 years of state aid control under the EC Treaty, annual levels of state aid across Europe are slowly falling but remain high in real terms. Against this background and the competition policy role of Articles 92 and 93, this article examines a variety of developments in 1995 and the early part of 1996 in regard to state aid control and identifies a number of indications pointing to possible future changes in the nature and orientation of Treaty supervision of national aids.
