The energy transition needs district heating and more efficiency. Nevertheless the discussion about the energy transition in Germany has been up to now a discussion mainly based on the transition of the electricity sector: heat production and distribution are still subor-dinately treated. How much CO_2 emissions could be saved by more efficiency in the heating market? The share of the annual energy consumption for generation of electricity in Germany is less than 25% while the share for heat production and distribution amounts to more than 40%.
