Process Control and Commitment Planning Tools for a Heating Network

Process control systems and planning tools can allow operators of complex heating networks to significantly improve the control of commitments and achieve substantial savings. In this article such an installation in the metropolitan area district heating network of Grenoble/France is presented: As a first step the network operator CCIAG installed a process control system that would allow to operate as closely as possible to production set points. In addition, a planning tool was needed in order to forecast the total amount of heat to be produced the next day to meet customer requirements and thereby determine the optimum set points for the generators.
