Bay Park, Xiamen

In Xiamen, Bay Park occupies a key position between the Western Harbour and Yuandang Lake. Xiamen is a coastal city in the southeast of China, famed for its beautiful urbanscape and accessible greenery. Since the start of the 21st century, Xiamen municipality has started to devote more attention to the city's identity by constructing new high-quality parks. It is this initiative that contributed to the opening of Bay Park in 2005, which had been redesigned by Atelier DYJG in 2003. Though the park was already being laid out in 2003, the municipality then decided to improve the original plan selected during the Bay Park competition held in 2000, for it was not considered good enough. Here, Atelier DYJG's greatest challenge was to work around the existing scheme, in particular preserving its central promenade to the sea. Thus the ground had already been levelled and the soil used to create landforms on the south and north sides. In the three years after the competition a few sculptures had also been placed.
