UniSwitch - A New Flexible STM Switch Fabric Concept

Synchronous Transfer Mode (STM)-based switching systems for narrowband and wideband will be essential to telecommunications for many years to come. Requirements for enhanced functionality and improved network performance, as well as the introduction of the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH), form the basis of the development of Ericsson's STM-based switch fabric concept - UniSwitch. The characteristics and flexibility of UniSwitch make it ideal for meeting the diverse switching requirements for communication needs encountered now and in the future. UniSwitch is triplicated and can handle all types of access, ranging from plain-telephony subscribers via n x 64 services up to STM-1 transmission systems. Two key components - Erichip and Eriopto4 -are used extensively. The authors describe UniSwitch, the new flexible STM switch-fabric concept - its characteristics and its capability of being implemented in different switch core sizes.
