Using DECT for Radio in the Local Loop

The DECT (Digital European Cordless Telecommunications) standard was completed by ETSI in 1992, and the first commercial DECT systems became available towards the end of 1993. These first systems were mainly aimed at the business market, to provide 'cordless PBX' facilities in offices and other workplaces. However, the technology is also suitable for public applications; it offers significant advantages for building new access networks without having to run wired connections all the way to subscribers' premises. The authors describe Ericsson's DRA 1900 system, which uses DECT to provide radio-in-the-local-loop (RLL) solutions.
