The GSM 900, DCS 1800 and PCS 1900 systems in the wireless world of the future

To satisfy the demanding service requirements of the mass market, Ericsson is focusing its wireless system development on efficient transmission and spectrum utilisation as well as increased capacity. By means of leading-edge technology solutions, such as tight frequency reuse, advanced antenna technologies, wideband frequency hopping and hierarchical cell structures, GSM 900/DCS 1800/PCS 1900 will be able to cope with the 50-60 per cent penetration rates that are expected for wireless communications in the next ten-year period. The authors discuss some of Ericsson's solutions - targeting residential and business usage into the next century. These solutions are described in three phases, namely a complementary phase, a transition phase and a replacement phase.
