Integrated Study of Several N.-European Basins: First Summary Report

During the years 1989 till 1992 Phase I of the German-Norwegian geoscientific research co-operation entitled » Basin Analysis and Reservoir Studies « was conducted. The focus was on sediments of the North Sea and other northern European basins. Interesting basic geoscientific results were obtained and considerable methodologic progress was made. An investigation of the Cenozoic sedimentation and erosion in the northern European basins showed great variations in space and time. Studies in the V0ring Basin and offshore Greenland documented strong mag-matic activities on the rifted continental margin of the North Atlantic Ocean. The preferred stress orientation observed on the Norwegian continental shelf was explained as a result of the compressive forces of the movement of plate boundaries. On a local scale measurements of borehole breakouts were instrumental to predict the orientation of hydraulic fractures.
