Environmental concerns have brought, about legislation which places limits on the sulfur content of gasoline. While gasoline sulfur is a direct contributor to SO_X emissions, it also poisons the low temperature activity of automotive catalytic converters, thereby having a deleterious effect on VOC, NO_X and total toxic emissions. A reduction of gasoline sulfur will have a much greater effect on these emissions than is readily available by other means. Current EU specifications are for a maximum gasoline sulfur content of 500 ppm, but EU have recently enacted a maximum sulfur level of 150 ppm by the Year 2000, and a further reduction to maximum 50 ppm by the Year 2005.
