Mercury from underground estuary

Researchers and lawmakers trying to deal with mercury contamination may soon have to worry about a hidden source for mercury in oceans— saline groundwater from subterranean estuaries. In a new study published in this issue of ES & T (pp 3090-3095), a team of researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution reports that a subterranean estuary that drains into the Waquoit Bay in Cape Cod, Mass., delivers high amounts of mercury to it.
