Air Pollution Control in Fuel Coke Manufacturing in India: Assessment of Current Practices and Policy with Recommendations for Improving Air Emission Management

In this article, current Indian practices for operating soft fuel coke units and beehive hard coke manufacturing units were analyzed in regard to air emission management using information from a survey conducted of 16 soft coke and nine beehive hard coke manufacturing units located in the State of West Bengal in the district of Bardhhaman. The guidelines stipulated in Indian regulations for deploying air pollution control devices to maintain the quality of the ambient air in the vicinity of the units were also assessed. The manufacturing processes were initially described, emphasizing the sources of air emission of both particulate matter and the gaseous pollutants. Finally, several recommendations were put forward strengthening the existing Indian guidelines for better air emissions management at these facilities.
