'Waste' as the Common 'Gene' Connecting Cleaner Production and Lean Manufacturing: A Proposition of a Hybrid Definition

Cleaner Production and Lean Manufacturing are both programs that have been embraced by manufacturers world-wide to improve their operations. However, efforts to combine the two into a single program can be fraught with difficulties, despite certain strong similarities. The authors of this article guide readers through the origins of both programs and apply a technique used in the study of linguistics to identify common word usage. This article explores the similarities between the programs as well as reasons, based on their origins, why the programs also display incompatibilities. To help bridge the gap, the authors propose a hybrid definition comprising elements common to both programs.
