Increases in industrial density and human populations, along with continued use of old and polluting technologies, have led to an increase in environmental pollution. Because environmental protection has become a global issue, cleaner and greener technologies are warranted to abate industrial pollution. In this article, we explore opportunities to use locally available, plant-based and other materials that can be used to remove chromium trivalent (Cr[Ⅲ]) and chromium hexavalent (Cr[Ⅵ]) ions and to control other pollutants (e.g., biological oxygen demand [BOD], chemical oxygen demand [COD], and sulfides) in the processing of animal skins.
