MSHA's Surprise Inspections

Underground coal mine owners and operators are alerted to "enhanced" inspections being conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).rnThe new approach is directed toward mines that chronically fail to imple-ment proper health and safety controls. Enhanced inspections go hand in hand with "impact" inspections, which are focused on identifying hazardous con-ditions or unsafe practices that present a risk of explosion.rnIn the most recent actions, MSHA con-ducted four inspections at mines in Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia, where, based in part on past alleged violations, MSHA suspects there are unsafe practices and conditions.
