How green is the UK's energy future?

The title above, which was suggested to me is, when examined, a largely technical question, begging all sorts of questions about what is actually meant by 'green', and what kind of energy mix is in reality likely to emerge from the current policies. Marcus Trinick and Cameron Hepburn have explained many of the challenges we face at a global level (see pp 186, 177), so I propose to look at the conditions required for making a successful transition to a low-carbon, affordable, 'keep the lights on' energy system for the future.
