Chapters on deer, the first hunters, and subsistence hunting set the stage for the bulk of the book, which deals with sportsmen, the sport, and the fortunes of the deer herd-from the rise of the sportsman in the late nineteenth century to the devastation brought by chronic wasting disease in the present.
