For the first time, in this issue Environmental History will publish two Gallery essays. The first, by Brian Black, harks back to this past summer by examining a still photograph from the live video feed of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill deep beneath the Gulf of Mexico. Black sees this image as both an example of nature's first reality TV show, competing with this summer's popular Jersey Shore, and also as evidence of Americans' devil's bargain with petroleum-we are outraged that oil extraction is hurting our environment, yet we continue our national addiction to fossil fuels. Black concludes by reminding us that dozens of other oil spills throughout the world are leaking, right now, into the Earth's oceans and across its landscape.
