Just as early nineteenth-century travelers, geologists, and surveyors approached the southern shore of LakernSuperior as terra incognita, gradually building through their observations layers of understanding, so Olmanson approaches place first as a reconnaissance, traversing broad terrain before focusing his analysis on the Chequamegon Bay region at the western end of Lake Superior's south shore (today's northern Wisconsin).
