Quagmire: Nation-Building and Nature in the Mekong Delta

Until recently, the northern Song Hong Delta, the cradle of Viet states and culture, was the privileged center of Viet Nam history. In contrast, the Mekong delta received little interest. Only two major studies have examined the region: Son Nam has examined Viet settlers in the delta, and Pierre Brocheux has focused on the agricultural col onization, social polarization, and political evolution of the delta during the French colonial period (1860-1960).
