The Environmental Movement, 1968-1972

All teachers of undergraduate US environmental history struggle with balancing classic primary sources with recent scholarship. Emphasizing the latter feels like sacrificing the former, and vice versa. The key, many of us have found, is to use primary sources that can provoke discussions informed by innovative research. That is what David Stradling gave us with Conservation in the Progressive Era: Classic Texts (University of Washington Press, 2004), and we should be happy that he has rounded off the twentieth century with The Environmental Movement. The central purpose of this collection is to capture that heady period of protest and response between 1968 and 1972, but Stradling sends out tendrils both fore and aft and all the while directs us to interpretive themes that have emerged from the social turn in environmental historiography.
