Toby Jones's Desert Kingdom is one of the first books that we might consider to be, at least partly, a work about the environmental history of Saudi Arabia. Although the author, an historian of the Middle East, does not frame this book as an environmental history perse but rather as a political history, his work will interest many environmental historians and not only those interested in the Middle East. At its heart, this book is about power and the various ways that the Al Saud have obtained and then consolidated their power over the course of the twentieth century with a particular focus on the environment that is new and unique.
