Most readers of Environmental History will know Adam Rome as its former editor and the author of The Bulldozer in the Countryside: Suburban Sprawl and the Rise of American Environmentalism (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2001). That book established him as a perceptive interpreter of postwar America's ecological stirrings. With this book-the first full-length treatment of Earth Day 1970-Rome solidifies that reputation. He makes a convincing case for placing Earth Day next to the reaction to Silent Spring as both an expression of the era's environmental anxieties and an inspiration to do something about them.
