摘要

These images from late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century British children's picture books enabled a particular kind of discourse that intertwined lessons about power and nature, and they deployed the tropics to represent both savage colonial danger and the success of the civilizing mission. Investigating the transformation of these picture books reveals that imperial ideologies were communicated not only through gender, class, and race hierarchies, but also through ideas, images, and stories about the environment. As we have seen, children's books were cultural mechanisms that both reflected and manufactured the successful conquest of nature.
