Trash Animals: How We Live with Nature's Filthy, Feral, Invasive, and Unwanted Species

This anthology represents a welcome addition to the growing body of scholarship in animal studies, an interdisciplinary field that explores how humans have thought about and interacted with nonhuman animals. Animal studies scholars not only seek to analyze human-animal relations in the past and present but also to foster ways of knowing other species as beings in their own right. Many practitioners of this vibrant, emerging research area ultimately aim to cultivate a more sympathetic and ethically informed treatment of what Aldo Leopold once referred to as "our fellow-voyagers in the odyssey of evolution." Drawing from the humanities, social sciences, and the natural sciences, work in animal studies sheds important light on the complex, multivalent, and often contradictory ways we have related to the many other creatures with which we inhabit the globe.
