Karst terrains and karst phenomena represent great scientific and engineering challenges for geologists, geomorphologists, speleologists, biologists, chemists, environmentalists, hydrologists and many others. From time immemorial these phenomena have unusual fascination for local inhabitants and also for scientists.rnIn the last decades of the 19th and first decades of the 20th century, the general approach in karst investigations was primarily scientific and theoretical. However, due to karst terrains producing a variety of resources, intensive construction of different man-made structures began in the second part of the 20th century. Various types of water resources developments have been carried out in many karst regions of the world.
