Many in the community are aware of the FOREGS atlas, edited in 2005 (Reijo Salminen) and 2006 (Walter De Vos and Timo Tarvainen) and produced by a large team of EuroGeoSurveys. That fine work saw a follow-up project concentrating on soils, the GEMAS project that resulted in the publication of Chemistry of Europe's Agricultural Soils (Fig. 1). Teams in each country gathered the samples and one laboratory carried out the analysis. The GEMAS project's sampling density was doubled in comparison with the previous atlas, using much more intensive quality control and sample material related to land use (cover) in order to comply with the European REACH directive.
