To increase longevity, gas turbines have a dual surface coating: metal to protect against oxidation and corrosion; and ceramic to provide thermal insulation. The coating's structure varies greatly, consisting of different-sized pores and cracks. These cracks and pores affect the efficiency of the thermal insulation and the life span of the coating.
