Drive your car into central London at busy times of a weekday, and you pay the congestion charge. But if you're driving a diesel car from about 2020 you'll pay a double charge, should current mayor Boris Johnson get his way. And from this year, if you live in the borough of Islington, with your diesel vehicle, you'll attract an extra resident's parking permit fee of £96. London isn't alone in taking action against diesels. Other cities such as Oxford are joining in; Paris too. Those of us who bought diesel cars a few years ago might be justified in feeling a little bemused.
