In Formula One car design, there are limits to material properties that can be used in the cars - but up until recently, testing for these limits has been something of a hit and miss affair because there has been no agreed, uniform testing method across the industry. Companies have had to err on the side of caution so that their cars are not disqualified, but with the result that a slight competitive edge may be lost. The UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has been working to address the problem, standardising tests and helping companies do more on their own.
