Windpower is the renewable energy that won't blow away. The political winds in the UK may have veered a little in the direction of extracting more from the remaining fossil fuel deposits and exploiting new technologies such as fracking. And windpower installations remain controversial, whether they are planned on windswept hilltops or out at sea. The doubts also extend to the effectiveness of windpower. The fact that the wind doesn't blow constantly in reliable fashion from a single direction has been cited as good reason to see it as potentially only a bit-part player in the overall energy supply system.
