Many members of European Parliament's Industry Committee appear to agree with their colleagues in the Environment Committee that the crucial registration stage of the EU's draft chemicals management system should be more nuanced and changed to focus more on the use of and exposure to substances. Last month the Industry Committee met over an internal working document, or 'non-paper,' by Lena Ek (Sweden - Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe) on the 2003 draft regulation to register, evaluate, authorize and restrict chemicals (REACH). In the paper, seen by EW, Ek advocates adopting a "more targeted approach where only chemicals of reasonable concern are tested and documentation produced." The text reveals that Swedish Liberal MEP has continued concerns over the draft provisions' impact on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and on "certain sectors" such as mobile phones and semiconductors.
