Pressure mounts on Commission over decaBDE waiver

The European Commission is coming under increasing pressure both from MEPs and some member states over a decision to waive the brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenylether (decaBDE) from a dangerous substances ban in an EU law due to take effect on 1 July 2006. The restriction on hazardous substances (RoHS) in electrical and electronic equipment directive outlaws the use of dangerous substances such as lead and mercury in electro goods from fridges to toasters, computers to faxes, unless they enjoy an exemption under one of the various annexes.
