Industry group calls for packaging recycling standards

Common European standards for recycling are needed to improve the management of packaging waste across the EU, according to Bill Duncan, Managing Director of the Association for the Sustainable Use of Resources in Europe (ASSURRE), when drawing conclusions from recent work analysing packaging waste statistics from 1998 to 2002. Duncan said that the figures showed that Europe is achieving real harmonisation in recycling but progress would be helped by European standards for recycling plants. There are currently a wide variety in treatment methods and costs of recycling in different member states.
