EU car emission proposal to be released next week

The Commission proposal on binding CO_2 emission limits for new cars will be released by DG Environment on 19 December and discussed at the Environment Council Ihe next day. It is already attracting much comment, for example by green group Greenpeace, which says the proposal is "doomed to fail". The long awaited detailed legislation on cutting CO_2 emission is expected to present a deadline for emissions cuts, provide long term targets, a harmonised labelling scheme and a compliance mechanism.
