UK local authority powers to reward recycling could save £94 million a year

The UK Government will allow up to five local authorities to pay householders who recycle well - but charge those that do not, a minister announced last week, as part of the UK Climate Bill (see story UK section). "Household waste recycling has quadrupled in the last ten years and waste is growing much less quickly than the economy," said minister for climate change, biodiversity and waste Joan Ruddock on 15 November. "In 2012 we now hope to see producers recycling and recovering 66 per cent of all paper and 65 per cent of all glass packaging.
