Show homes not the answer, says energy expert

Building energy saving architectural party pieces like London's "gherkin" that uses solar energy, cooling systems and lightwells (see EE & PL: 9 March 2007, p15-16) or the ecoflats (BEDzed -Beddington Zero Energy Development) in south London, are all very well, but they are not enough in the aim to achieve "zero net energy" in buildings. That was the view of Bill Sisson, director of United Technologies, before a seminar on energy efficiency in buildings this month.
