Environment Council ends deadlock for surprise waste deal

The Environment Council on 28 June managed to overcome deep divisions and back a compromise deal on the proposal to revise the waste framework directive. In what was a coup for the German presidency just three days before handing over to Portugal, the compromise deal saw only one dissenter, Italy, which abstained. Key to the compromise deal, which German environment minister Sigmar Gabriel achieved over lunch, was a paragraph on transboundary waste movements for incineration in other member states.
