The European Parliament's Environment Committee last week adopted a report calling for a ban on exports of mercury from 1 July 2010 and for stricter rules on storage of surplus mercury. Voting at the end of last week on a report from Greek MEP Dimitrios Papadimoulis (European United Left - Nordic Green Left) on a European Commission proposal, the Committee chose to bring the ban forward by seven months and to extend it to cinnabar ore and other mercury compounds with a mercury concentration of above five per cent by weight.
