Barroso heralds bioenergy boost for EU farmers

Bioenergy could prove to be a strong card for the future of European farmers, EU Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said last week, echoing the sentiments expressed by EU farm commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel earlier this month. Speaking at the opening of Green Week in Berlin, Mr Barroso repeated Ms Fischer Boel's optimism that the growth in the use of biofuels will be a positive development for EU farmers. Earlier this month the Commission announced, as part of its energy package proposal, that 10 per cent of transport fuel in all EU member states should be provided by biofuels by 2020 (see EE & PL, 12 January, p15).
