Agriculture could contribute to the reduction of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions by reducing fertiliser use, increasing livestock yields, shifting away from the more carbon intensive forms of meat production, and turning waste into fuel by the use of anaerobic digestion, according to a new UK government report on tackling climate change.rnPublished last week, at the same time as the UN climate change conference began in Poznan, Poland, the Climate Change Committee's report looks at ways in which the UK could meet its pledge to cut carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases by 80 per cent from 1990 levels by 2050.rnIt recommends an interim target of 34 per cent for 2020, or 42 per cent if there is a global deal to cut emissions. This would mean a reduction of between 110 and 175 million tonnes CO2 equivalent.
