MEPs quiz Dancet on chemicals of most concern

The so called "candidate" list under REACH (the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals regulation) came under the spotlight this week in the exchange of views between MEPs and the head of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) Geert Dancet. The list so far of chemicals considered potentially dangerous and requiring a full assessment stands at 16 - viewed as minimalist by ECHA's critics. But the meeting of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee heard that this is a living list, which will be added to all the time, and there was some sympathy from MEPs for starting off with a manageable number given the enormous amount of work which will needed for the assessments.
