Plastics recyclers welcome plastics recycling target and urge registration for REACH

The EU target to recycle 50 per cent of household waste by 2020 under the recently adopted revision of the waste framework Directive has received the thumbs up from plastics recyclers. "The revision sets a clear hierarchy of waste treatment as well as a target and asks member states to set up separate collection schemes," said Bernard Merkx, EuPR (European Plastics Recyclers) President. Mr Merkx said that he was disappointed with some of the compromises agreed, notably that the recycling definition is not limited to mechanical recycling: "However the definition is wide enough for interpretation in order to innovate, and it is very clear in excluding energy recovery from its scope."
