MEPs say new regulatory procedure should be used for identification of packaging

The packaging and packaging waste directive is one of the 47 Regulations and Directives to be affected by the new comitology procedure with scrutiny, supposed to give Parliament more power. However several MEPs, including former environment committee chair Caroline Jackson, although calling for the procedure to be used for material identification of packaging, is doubtful that the procedure will have much force, The "regulatory procedure with scrutiny", adopted by the Council in March (see EE & PL: 7 March 2008, p24-25) gives the Parliament and Council a three-month right of scrutiny over implementing measures, with the power to veto proposals that they judge not compliant with the parent legislation, or which would mean the European Commission overstepping its powers.
