MEPs divided over incineration and by-products in WFD

The status of energy from waste, or incineration plants, and of by-products caused most controversy this week at the debate on the revision of the waste framework Directive - WFD (see Top Story). Rapporteur UK MEP Caroline Jackson (European People's Party - EPP) faced opposition from several MEPs on incineration at the 2 April European Parliament Environment Committee. Italian Socialist Guido Sacconi said that there was more reason to deal with this form of waste disposal in the incineration directive - and the definition of a formula should be given in that context. It was not a priority for the WFD.
