MEPs in the environment committee voted this week to bring the principles of the UN's Globally Harmonised System (GHS) of classification and labelling of chemicals into European legislation. Following intense discussion last week (see EE & PL: 28 March 2008, p. 11-12) and in a move that will no doubt anger green organisations, MEPs however chose not to push for a requirement to label substances that are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT), and to exclude a fifth "acute toxicity" category (category 5) to the proposed classification scheme.
