2008 carbon emissions on the decrease in the EU

EU greenhouse gas emissions went down in 2008 to about 10.7 per cent below the 1990 level, more than half way to the EU's binding target of a 20 per cent cut by 2020. That was the message of new figures released on 28 August by the European Environmental Agency (EEA) and confirmed on 31 August.rnThe EEA said that the majority of the decline in emissions in 2008, for the fourth consecutive year, was due to lower CO_2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion in the energy, industry and transport sectors resulting from the "global economic recession which began in 2008".
