Toy safety directive published with chemical restrictions

The revamped toy safety directive including new restrictions on chemicals, particularly dangerous substances, comes into force on 20 July after the text was published in this week's Official Journal (OJ L 170 of 30.6.2009).rnHowever, most of the provisions do not take effect until 20 July 2011 and manufacturers have four years, until 20 July 2013 to bring their products into line with rules on the chemicals used, a transition period given to allow time to develop standards. The new directive 2009/48/EC particularly limits use of chemicals that are carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic (CMR) as well as allergic substances, fragrances and certain metals, although nickel in stainless steel has been found safe so will be allowed.
